A large-scale recycling center on the Saclay plateau
The Saclay plateau is now home to the largest recycling center in the Île-de-France region. This new facility, managed by the Siom (Mixed Household Waste Syndicate) of the Chevreuse Valley, meets growing waste management needs. It serves both individuals and businesses in the 19 member municipalities.
A modern, comprehensive site designed for reuse
Designed to optimize collection, sorting and recovery, the site offers several key facilities:
-
Three compactors for scrap metal, wood and cardboard.
-
An integrated recycling center with repair and reuse workshops.
Thanks to this organization, the recycling center promotes reuse. It extends the lifespan of objects while limiting the volumes sent to landfill. This model directly supports the local circular economy.
An ambitious project serving the environment
Built by the Veolia group for a cost of 6 million euros, the waste disposal site stands out for its environmental performance:
-
400 m² of photovoltaic panels cover the site's energy needs.
-
A rainwater recovery system allows green spaces to be watered and facilities to be cleaned.
According to Jean-François Vigier, president of Siom and mayor of Bures-sur-Yvette, this achievement is both “ambitious and functional”, and is establishing itself as an essential tool for the territory.
Logistical support after the floods
Since its opening, the site has been receiving around twenty visitors per day. This figure is expected to increase rapidly, particularly due to the recent flooding. The mayor of Longjumeau, Sandrine Gelot, whose town center was badly affected, praises the facility's immediate usefulness:
"This new recycling center will prove essential. Our businesses, badly affected by the floods, can dispose of their waste there more easily."
To address the emergency, it is proposing to allow professionals to make several daily visits, instead of the usual one. This adaptation will speed up waste management after a disaster.
Adjustments still needed
Despite its effectiveness, the site requires some improvements, particularly in terms of signage. Igor Trickovski, mayor of Villejust, regrets that too many people are unaware of the opening of the new structure:
"A large sign in front of the Villejust recycling center would be useful. Many people don't know that the Saclay recycling center is open."
The Siom therefore plans to strengthen the signage in the coming weeks, in order to improve user orientation.
An essential infrastructure for the southern Paris region
With this innovative recycling center, the region is taking a new step toward sustainable waste management. The facility offers:
-
Easy access for the 19 member municipalities of Siom.
-
Concrete solutions for sorting, recovery and reuse.
-
Logistical support in the event of environmental crises.
In summary, Saclay is acquiring a modern tool, serving the environment, the circular economy and collective well-being.
