The residents of Terre-de-Haut now have a proper recycling center. Located in Fond-Curé, on the bay, it was inaugurated on January 31, 2024. The President of the Region, Ary Chalus, was present at the event.
This facility replaces a former open-air depot. It covers over 2,400 m². Household waste from the 1,600 residents is now centralized there. Several bins are used to sort waste: rubble, bulky items, green waste, used oil, etc. Trucks can drop off their loads directly there.
Construction began in October 2022. It cost approximately €2,7 million. The Region was the project manager. Ademe also contributed €500,000 in funding. This waste disposal site is part of a regional plan. It provides for the construction of eight similar structures, for a total budget of €25 million.
Some are concerned about its location by the sea. In the event of a cyclone or storm, the site could be exposed. Engineers say the dumpsters are securely moored. They are designed to withstand this type of event.
